Bishop Ezekiel Hopkins was an influential English bishop and theologian who lived from 1634 to 1690. He was born in Suffolk, England, and educated at Cambridge University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1652 and a Master of Arts degree in 1656. After completing his studies, Hopkins served as a tutor and preacher in several churches before being appointed as Bishop of Derry and Raphoe in Ireland in 1681.
Hopkins is best known for his theological writings, which were characterized by his strong commitment to traditional Anglican doctrine and his defense of the Church of England against the growing influence of dissenting Protestant groups. He was a prolific author, and his works include sermons, theological treatises, and biblical commentaries. Some of his most notable works include “The Vanity of the World”, “The Doctrine of the Two Covenants”, and “The Triumph of Faith in the Regenerate Soul”.
Hopkins was also known for his advocacy of strict moral discipline and his opposition to the excesses of the Restoration period. He was a prominent member of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, an organization dedicated to promoting religious education and moral reform in England. In addition, he was involved in the establishment of several charitable institutions, including a hospital for the poor in Dublin.
Despite his strong commitment to Anglican doctrine, Hopkins was known for his tolerant and charitable spirit. He was respected by both Anglicans and dissenters for his intellectual honesty and his willingness to engage in respectful dialogue with those who held different theological views. He was also noted for his pastoral sensitivity and his concern for the spiritual welfare of his parishioners.
Hopkins was an important figure in the Anglican Church and in English religious history. His writings and his example continue to inspire those who seek to understand and live out the Christian faith in today’s world.
